Bruce walking to the Columbian Ice Field. Parking lot is in the far distance. Beyond that, and to the right is the visitor's center. One hundred years ago the ice field extended to the visitor's center. Now it is receding at a rate of 3 feet per year.

For the past twenty years, with the milder
winters, the temperatures have not dropped to the previous -35 degrees,
thus allowing the bark beetle to spread to epidemic proportions through
out the Canadian Rockies and the northern most areas of the United
States. It was previously believed that the beetles preferred only the
older trees, but Bruce and I saw disturbing evidence that they were
eating the new growth trees, as well. |
