MONTANA COTTONWOOD
by Horatius x Aspen Ruthie

Aspen & Cottonwood, one day old.

Montana Cottonwood...

was my one and only attempt at stepping into the Thoroughbred Breeding Industry.  I acquired her Dam, Aspen Ruthie, through Thornmar Farm, and bred her to Horatius in 1998.

Cottonwood & Aspen, at Thornmar Farm, where I work. Cottonwood was foaled there.

Regretfully, Aspen was euthanized in Feb. of 2000, due to a tumor on the spleen.

~ Cottonwood was sold at the Thoroughbred sale in Timonium, in Dec. of 2000, and the following spring, she was placed with a trainer.

~ Kathy Hugler and I went to see run her first race at Philadelphia Park. It turned out to be one of the most thrilling moments of my life, when she won.  Pam, the owner, invited Kathy and I  to go into the winners circle with her.

~Cottonwood ran a few more races, remaining in the money, then suddenly she began to drop to the back of the pack.

~When Pam discovered that Cottonwood had an injury to her leg, and would no longer be able race, she called me to see if I was interested in taking her as a broodmare.  Bruce and I talked it over, and decided that we would leave the Thoroughbred industry to the wealthy.

Cottonwood is the full sister to three times Stakes Winner STEPPEDOUTOFADREAM.

~I called Thornmar, and was pleased that they were interested in taking her as a broodmare.  In 2003, she was shipped to Kentucky, and bred to Silver Ghost.  It is wonderful to have her so close again, and to be able to deliver her babies. She's a real sweetheart.

~After carrying her foal, for nearly a month past her due date, Cottonwood delivered a beautiful colt on April 7, 2004. Though Cottonwood developed some complications the following day, both her and the foal are now healthy and doing great.

~ Cottonwood is a wonderful Mom.

Up on wobbly legs. He still hasn't dried off yet.

~The little guy's sire, SILVER GHOST, is gray and we believe he is going to be gray, as well.

It is such a joy to see Cottonwood come full circle. She was born at Thornmar, lived at Gypsy Haven a short time, was sold at Timonium,  raced, and returned to Thornmar to deliver her first foal.
