light complexion, blue eyes,
and auburn hair.
On July 10, 1863, Thomas fought in the Battle of Vicksburg where
he contracted Rheumatism and Malaria, which eventually
contributed to a permanent limp to his walk, causing him much
suffering throughout his life, and making it difficult for him
to find employment. Letter from H. Hacker, describes Thomas's
condition while working as a night watchman for the John
Wanamaker store in Phila.1887 -1888. Thomas's eldest son Thomas,
also worked for Mr. Hacker as his bookkeeper.
Thomas died in September of 1909 at the age of 69, and is buried
in the Fernwood Cemetery in Lansdown, Pa.
Thomas's Medal of Honor was last known to be in the possession
of Mrs. William Britton, Thomas’s in-laws through the marriage
of his daughter Florinda to William Britton.

MY RELATIONSHIP TO THOMAS
I am the daughter of Walter Cyril Payne
Born on Aug. 28, 1937
Walter's father
was William John Cyril Howard Britton Payne,
Born on April 14, 1895 in Pa.
William's
father was Thomas Henry Louis Payne,
Born on July 4, 1870 in Texas.
Thomas's father
was the Thomas Henry Louis Payne that we are addressing in this
Brief History of the Payne Family Tree.
ADDITIONAL
NOTES
~ Notes from Lou Payne mentioned that Fannie Payne MacCashin and
her family had known Thomas when he lived in Galveston,
Louisiana, St. Louis, and New Orleans. They too, attested to his
illness.
*Fanny Harrison Goulburn Payne married Louis Parker McCashin who
became my Grandfather's step father in 1908.
I also confirmed through Ancestry.com, that Mary R. Payne had
applied for Thomas's
pension in Oct. of 1909.
The notes from
the desk of Lou Payne indicate that Thomas's Father William,
also served in the Civil War with a Mass. Regiment. He also had
a brother William, who served with a New York Regiment. I am
still in the process of researching this information, and will
post any additional information as I find it.

THE GRAVE
SITE
Bruce & I visited the grave of Thomas in late November of 2006,
and were disappointed to find that there is no longer a stone on
the grave. Don Morfe of Baltimare Md., had visited the gravesite
in 2000, and had place a photograph of the grave on
www.findagrave.com At
that time however, there had been a headstone, but the writing
was extremely difficult to read. With the help of Don, we are in
the process of attaining a new marker through the Veterans
Association. This new marker will also honor Thomas's service
in the Civil War with the 37th Illinois Infantry, and his Medal
Of Honor.
Bruce and I did
find the gravesite, ( a lot of seven) and fortunately one stone
remained standing. The names on the stone were of his children,
Margaret & Rosina. The others buried alongside of Thomas are,
his wife, Mary; and his children, Fannie, Alice, and Florinda.
I was also able to confirm the proper spelling of William
Britton's last name.
According to the records on file at the cemetery, the lots had
once belonged to William Britton, and had been transferred to
Thomas's wife, Mary Rosina Payne.

Bruce & I also visited the
Medal Of Honor
Grove at the Freedom Foundation in Valley Forge,
Pennsylvania.

Special thanks to Louis
Payne; and to my parents, Walt & Jackie Payne; Mary “Payne”
Getler, and my Uncle Charlie; my Aunt Gracie Payne; Aunt Ellie
Beck; and my Grandmother, Millie Getler. Without their help
this valuable information would not have been made available to
me.
Sincerely,
Theresa Alicia Payne McClay
