MORE ABOUT INDIA BLUE PEAFOWL...

The India Blue Peafowl is directly related to the pheasant in both genes and size, the main difference being the Peacock's beautiful plumage.

A female is called a peahen, a male is called a peacock, and their young offspring are called peachicks.

In captivity the Indian Peacock has produced several mutations.  These include the Black-shouldered; the White; and the Pied, in which the normal plumage of the Indian Blue is irregularly marked with white; while the Spalding  is a hybrid between the Indian and the Green species.

The India Blue is native to India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. They are valued in India because they eat young cobras, keeping down the numbers of venomous snakes in human communities.

Phoenicians brought peacocks to Egypt more than 3000 years ago.

In addition to being raised for ornamental purposes, the Romans extensively raised Peafowl for the table. Medieval Europe carried on this practice as well.

These birds are extremely hardly and can live to be 15 years old in captivity, though one has been recorded to live up to be 40 years!
