Lady Amherst Pheasants

"Rufus"

October, 2009

On August 20, 2008 I purchased three Lady Amherst Pheasants from Clint Walker of Barclay, Md.  They were hatched by one of his hens and are approximately six weeks old.

We moved them into the Aviary with  the Frillbacks, Satinets and Hamburgs. When they begin to mature we'll settle them into a pen of their own.

The Lady Amherst Pheasant is a native of Southwestern China, Myanmar,  and northern Burma.

William Pitt Amherst was responsible for sending the first birds to London in 1828.  It is said that the bird was named in honor of his wife Sarah, Countess of Amherst.

In the fall of 2008, we moved the Lady Amherst into the new addition to the Aviary, the Amherst Room.
Now that our birds are maturing, it is obvious that we have two cockbirds and one hen.

"Avis"
We have recently met an inspiring woman and have named our hen "Avis"
in honor of her.
