I had been a
great admirer of Shadow’s sire, CAL Midnight Enchanter (Midnight) for
several years, and in 1993 I had contacted Rising Sun Morgans with the hope of
purchasing a black filly as a broodmare prospect. When I had learned that
Blue Knoll Diamond was due to foal in a matter of weeks, I excitedly
awaited for the phone call from Cindy. When the call came, there was a
note of disappointment in her voice when she informed me that her mare had
given birth to a colt and not a filly. I too, was a little disappointed, but
having admired Midnight for so long, I was still anxious to see his first
offspring.

Bruce & Shadow ~
3 days old. |
The following weekend my husband Bruce and I took a drive
to Rising Sun Morgans. At that time, I had never considered owning a
stallion. But when the little colt, at only three days old, had proven
to be as gentle and kind as his sire, my husband Bruce purchased him for
me as an Anniversary present. On the ride home we had both agreed upon
the name "Shadow," for much like a shadow, he never left our sides
during our entire visit. Despite my excitement, Shadow did not come to
live at Gypsy Haven until he was weaned at the age of 5 months.

In the winter of
1995, at the age of two, Shadow was shipped to New Jersey and placed in
training with Kathy Peebles for eight months under harness. From there he
was moved to Dream Acres Morgans in Ridgely Maryland, where he was broken
to saddle by Gary Thomas. At the age of four he was standing as stud and
serviced his first mare, Dream Acres
Melody. But it wasn’t until the
fall of 1999, with the building of the new barn, that Shadow at last came
home to Gypsy Haven Morgans. Since then, he has become a friend,
companion, and a tremendous asset to our breeding program, consistently
passing on to his offspring, his wonderful disposition, confirmation, versatility, elegance
and athleticism.
