MORE ABOUT RED GOLDEN PHEASANTS... Red Golden Pheasants come from the mountains of Central China. Red Golden's are intelligent, and though cautious, they can be easily tamed with a handful of greens. They are hardy and are one of the easiest to raise and breed in backyard aviaries. From mid spring until summer the female will lay a clutch of 8 to 12 eggs, and will sit on them for 22-23 days. While her camouflage serves to keep her safe, the male's brilliant plumage draws the interest of predators away from the nest. This will be the only interest that the male will have in the eggs or in the rearing of the young. The young can fly at 10 to 14 days. Red Goldens are non-aggressive and live together peacefully. They are extremely compatible with other types of birds, as well, and can be housed with waterfowl, doves, pigeons and even peafowl. Much of their time is spent in running, playing, and courting, not resting until sundown. The color of the eyes can often determine the sex of a young bird early on. The males have green eyes, while the females have brown. |
