Though "the boys" have mineral salt blocks in their stalls
and are well fed, I find it interesting that the first thing that they
do in the winter when they go outside, is to chew the bark from the
trees.

I recall reading that when the snow was so deep that they could not
forage, the Lakota ponies finding nothing else to eat, would eat the
bark from the cottonwoods to sustain them through the winter... Perhaps
they remember.
