I made a second trip out west in 1998 to do some research on Sitting Bull and the Lakota who too refuge in Canada in 1877. This time I went with my Mom Jackie and her friend Marlene. We rented a little cabin in the Black Hills for a few days to rest up before the trip home.

The photo to the left is in "The Needles." Note the narrow tunnel that you have to drive through.

In the photograph to the right, I am boarding a helicopter to get a closer look at the "Crazy Horse Monument. Marlene went along with me. It was our first helicopter ride... and what a blast.

Below is a photograph of Mt. Rushmore.  We did not find it to be all that impressive. They have recently built a new visitors center at the base, making the monument look all that much smaller. To my delight, it indeed makes the "Crazy Horse Monument" all that more spectacular. As it should be...

The photo to the right is of Marlene with one of the burrows, a descendent from those that had been left behind by the miners in the 1800's.
